Blockchain TVL review: Ethereum leads, but Base has stronger monthly growth

Ethereum holds nearly three times as much DeFi capital as the next three chains combined. Base grew fastest last month. Both are true, and they answer different questions: who is biggest, and who is moving fastest. And all four fell on the day of the snapshot.

DefiLlama chain rankings All four down 24h
ChainDeFi TVL24h1 month
Ethereum$51.45B−4.84%+3.63%
Solana$6.33B−4.44%+6.91%
Base$6.13B−4.51%+8.86%
BSC$5.62B−2.57%−2.16%
TL;DR
  1. Ethereum's DeFi TVL of $51.45B is 8.4× Base's and 74% of the four chains combined.
  2. Base grew fastest: +8.86% in a month, 5.23 points ahead of Ethereum. But Ethereum added the most dollars, about $1.80B, roughly 2.3× the other three combined.
  3. All four fell over 24 hours, together about $3.35B, more than their net monthly gain. A daily headline hides the monthly trend; the monthly figure hides a sharp day.
  4. Solana leads Base by just $204M (3.3%), close enough for prices or one large deposit to flip the order. And TVL changes mix price moves with deposits.

Ethereum's lead is in a different league

On DefiLlama's chain rankings, Ethereum's DeFi TVL is $51.447B. The next three, Solana, Base and BSC, hold $6.33B, $6.13B and $5.62B. Ethereum alone is about 8.4× Base and 74% of the four combined.

Below Ethereum the race is tight. Solana leads Base by just $204M, about 3.3% of Base's TVL. A price move or a single large protocol deposit could reorder them. Ethereum's lead isn't going to change on that kind of noise.

02 / Momentum

Fastest growth and biggest growth aren't the same chain

Base posted the strongest monthly growth at +8.86%, 5.23 points ahead of Ethereum's +3.63%. Solana grew 6.91%; BSC was the only one to shrink, −2.16%.

Convert those rates to dollars and the picture flips. Ethereum's smaller percentage on a much bigger base added about $1.80B, more than twice Base (+$0.50B), Solana (+$0.41B) and BSC (−$0.12B) together. Neither view makes one network "better". One measures capital scale, the other recent momentum.

03 / Timeframes

The daily figure and the monthly figure tell opposite stories

All four chains fell over 24 hours, between −2.57% and −4.84%. Three of the four are still up on the month. A headline built only on the daily change would erase the longer trend. But the monthly number also hides how sharp that last day was.

Working back from the two windows, the four chains together lost about $3.35B in 24 hours, more than their combined net gain over the month (about $2.59B). Measured up to the day before the snapshot, Ethereum was up about +8.9% on the month and Base about +14.0%. One day cut those to +3.6% and +8.9%. Whether that day is the start of a reversal needs the observations that follow it.

04 / The close race

Solana and Base are separated by noise

The Solana–Base gap of $204M equals about 3.3% of Base's TVL. If Base's TVL rose 3.3% with Solana flat, they would swap places. Both chains moved more than that in the last 24 hours alone. A ranking this close says little on its own; the trend over several snapshots says more.

The ranking gap is smaller than either chain's 24-hour move. Either could swap places on an ordinary day.

05 / Interpretation

What TVL change can and can't tell you

TVL moves when token balances change and when token prices change. A month of rising prices can lift TVL with zero new deposits; a falling day can cut TVL while deposits rise. So none of these changes, on their own, proves net inflows. Chain TVL also isn't total wealth on a network, and the provider's inclusion rules and optional categories change what's covered.

For ecosystem research, track what TVL is made of as well as its total. Growth spread across independent lending and trading apps means something different from growth concentrated in one pool. Separate token balances from prices before crediting depositors.

06 / DashMode's assessment

Biggest and fastest are separate questions

Ethereum leads on scale by a wide margin. Base leads on recent momentum. Solana and Base are close enough that their order is noise. All four had a sharp down day that a monthly table alone would hide.

To go further, track TVL composition, separate balances from prices, and follow several snapshots rather than one. That turns a leaderboard into evidence.

Ratios, shares and dollar changes use rounded displayed values; month-ago and day-before values are derived as TVL ÷ (1 + displayed change). TVL changes combine asset-price and balance effects and do not prove net inflows.
